: We have named this African King because it is the largest macowanii that we grow. We grow over 1000 different crinum including about 350 of our own hybrids. We have several very nice macowanii varieties. These bulbs were originally imported from a grower in Africa in 2001 as small seedlings, about 1-2 years old. They first bloomed in April 2003 and formed some seed. In 2004 and 2005 they really started producing large quantities of seed (seeds range from the size of a small marble to almost ping-pong ball size). This is a bulb from the seeds that we started in the summer of 2004-5, so they are now a blooming size. They grow to about 3' tall with 4-5' leaves and have very large bulbs that will grow to over 6 in diameter. This is a choice crinum and one of the most rewarding to grow because of its size, beauty and good growth habits. There is a good possiblilty that this is actually a fertile hybrid, or at the least a cross of two different macowanii. Crinum macowanii is a species that forms seeds but almost never produces offsets. This is typical of many of the crinum species. On rare occasions they will form new offset bulbs but that usually happens only after a bulb is dug and nicked or damaged in some way around the basal plate (the bottom of the bulb where the roots form). African King has actually formed a few offsets bulbs for me in the first 12 years but not many. It is a prolific seed producer, however, and we have successfully used it as a seed parent or pollen parent in many crosses with other crinum species and hybrids. It is one of the most majestic and beautiful of all crinum. The scapes stay erect and are topped with white, ornamental blooms whose tips recurl back about 360 degrees. Since crinum live for decades, a clump of these bulbs can create a nice focal point in your flower beds that will be a treasure for decades to come. Super Ellen (Bosanquet) is another crinum wonder bulb and the second tallest bulb we have in our large collection! It is one of 4 absolutely superb sister seedlings (all different seeds from the same cross). It is the tallest of the four. The bulbs can grow to over 8" in diameter, almost the size as an official soccer ball, if you can imagine that! The flowers are a dark "red", much darker than most crinum such as Ellen Bosanquet. The flowers are also huge, about 6" in diameter. Super Ellen has a strong scape and high bloom count. Sunbonnet (see our listing) is a bit darker but not quite as tall. It will not start forming offsets until it is about 5 years old, and over the next few years it can produce high numbers of new offset bulbs. This is a true horticultural marvel and anyone that likes beautiful flowers would be happy to have it in their collection We have observed as many as 28 flowers on 72" tall scapes. The leaves will grow to over 7' long and mature bulbs will reach about 9" in diameter weighing over 20 pounds. :Lorraine Clark is one of the darkest red crinum hybrids we have seen. The only other darker color we have in our collection is one we sell called 'Antares'. It looks more like the first couple of photos where the other pictures are more washed out by a flash. It is a genetically unstable hybrid and has produced some plants that have red flowers with random white stripes. If you look carefully you can see a couple of white streaks. This trait happens quite often with hybrids of Ellen Bosanquet. Although we are growing some that have LOTS of white color, even some entire flowers that are white. It's neat to have a plant with 2 different colored flowers at the same time. Unfortunately, there will not be enough of those to sell for a few more years.The bulbs grow rapidly and can produce an amazing number of offsets when they have the right conditions. For example, one bulb we acquired was 1 3/4 in diameter in June of 2007. 18 months later it was 3 3/4 in diameter and had produced 30 new offsets but still had not bloomed. It blooms May - July here in northeast Florida, zone 9. The flowers open sequentially over several days. In a large grouping of bulbs they can be spectacular. We have observed mature bulbs with as many as 10 flowers on 22 tall scapes and our largest bulb measured 5 1/2 in diameter. It is a must for any crinum collector and has only been distributed among other collectors. Lorraine Clark is marginally fertile and can produce some seeds and has been used to create a few hybrids. Scabrum 'Starburst' (our name) is a species bulb that forms seeds and different clones/variations are commonly found growing in old gardens. We grow about 15 different clones. Starburst has been a bit of a puzzle for us. Although it looks like a scabrum, it has a much longer blooming period. It is also our tallest scabrum and one of the best seed producers. Our best guess is that it is some type of scabrum hybrid that was back-crossed to another scabrum. The flowers are white with bright red stripes and measure about 4" in diameter. The color and shape are great and it offsets well (forms new bulbs). We have observed as many as 8 buds on 30" tall scapes. Mature bulbs reach about 5" in diameter. :Jennifer White is named after a daughter-in-law. It has almost pure flowers with a very light pink stripe and forms offsets like crazy. Usually 6 flowers form on scapes up to 30 tall. In our opinion, digweedii type blooms are some of the most INCREDIBLE blooms in the world of crinums, certainly ranked in our top 10 list. Among these are several distinct varieties of digweedii. We grow about 2 dozen forms. They are VERY fragrant, smelling like lilac. The spindle-shaped bulbs multiply by short stolons (very short fleshy root extension that grow out from base of the bulb) to form compact, upright clumps. They will form large, beautiful clumps if left undisturbed for many years. Once nice feature is that large bulbs can produce 6 or more offsets in a year.We grow over 1000 different crinum, including about 350 of our own hybrids. BACKGROUND: Officially named C x Digweedii when crossed in 1820, was probably a cross of C. americanum and C. scabrum. : Pink Trumpet has one of the largest flowers to be found on a crinum and also is one of the tallest crinum which will rise majestically over most of your garden plants. As a bonus, the scape is also quite strong, so it does not have such a tendency to flop over as easily as some tall crinum. The only pinks that grow taller in our collection of over 1000 different crinum, including about 350 of our own hybrids, are Emma Jones and Super Ellen. This beautiful bulb has long, narrow, trumpet-shaped rose-pink flowers with a yellow-green throat, and are about 7 long. The keel (outside of the bud) is quite light and appears to have white stripes adding to its attractiveness. This white stripe is very uncommon as most pinks have a darker pink stripe on the keels. As a bonus, it has a very nice fragrance. Mature bulbs will form several offsets per year. This has been primarily a collector's crinum and has not been widely distributed. In the summer of 2009, the only nursery we know that has it available is selling large, blooming-size bulbs for $100. So far our largest scapes have been measured at 50 tall with as many as 13 flowers. Our largest bulbs are just over 5 in diameter. Ours have bloomed May-August here in northeast FL, zone 9. It will form large, beautiful clumps if left undisturbed for many years. BACKGROUND: This bulb was given its name by Patrick Malcolm, the founder of the Nursery at Ty Ty, GA. : This beautiful bulb has a dark rose-pink flower with a white throat. It is fragrant and offsets slower than Ellen Bosanquet. The leaves are darker and less coarse and pointed and arch more gracefully. It is much more stately in form than Ellen. It blooms in May and continues all summer, where Ellen blooms for about a month. Scapes can grow 4+ feet with up to 20 flowers. Its foliage is more like C. powellii. It will form large, beautiful clumps if left undisturbed for many years. It is one of the taller of the over 1000 crinum that we grow. BACKGROUND: An improved form of Ellen Bosanquet. : False or true, False White Queen is still one of the prettiest crinum in the garden. It is a medium to large-size crinum with a large, wide open, pure white flower. It forms seeds and we have used it both as a seed parent and as a pollen parent in our hybridization program. The flowers are large and have petal tips that recurve back over 360 degrees giving them a fancy, regal appearance. Flowers have a tiny yellow-green eye and white stamens and the pollen sacs turn black on the second day. The scapes are strong and it forms regular offset bulbs once the bulbs mature. We have observed as many as 20 flowers that open sequentially on 38 tall scapes. Mature bulbs grow to about 5 in diameter and offset at a modest pace. It is a reliable bloomer from late February - June here in zone 9, northeast Florida. BACKGROUND:False White Queen has become somewhat of a controversy. It was originally hybridized by Luther Burbank, but the exact cross is unknown. The experts are quite certain it is a hybrid of crinum macowanii and crinum xpowellii alba (white). xPowellii alba is a cross of bulbispermum (which gives it good cold hardiness) and moorei alba (white). Because it involves some people that are still alive, we won't go into the controversy other than to say that this bulb, after being lost for many decades, was discovered in a garden in Fresno, CA and reliably traced back to its origin, the nursery of the famous Luther Burbank. We grow the true White Queen and the false White Queen and can't really tell the difference. :Gonzalez is easily our tallest digweedii variety that can be pure white or sometimes have a very, very light pink stripe down each flower sepal. This is probably due to temperature variations which often can influence of the flower color. Warmer temperatures usually result in less color. Of the two dozen, or so, forms of digweedii we grow, this is is unique in several regards, height and a varying flower color being two. The flower scape is strong but because of the large size and weight of the 8 diameter flowers, wind and rain can often cause it to fall over, so staking might be necessary for full enjoyment. This is true of many crinum with lots of flowers. It has an an ability to offset moderately, so mature bulbs can produce several offset bulbs every year. In general, digweedii multiply very well. In our opinion, the digweedii type blooms are among the most INCREDIBLE blooms in the world of crinum. Gonzalez is rare and has never been distributed. It will do fine in a container but will thrive in warm moist conditions with rich soil. The beautiful white, star-shaped flowers usually lack the light pink stripe running down each teapal/sepal. We have recorded as many as 8 flowers on scapes that can rise to 48 tall. Digweedii also can go by the common name Nassau Lily and it is a term that refers to any hybrid form of Milk and Wine crinum that have a star, not a trumpet shape, with wide, overlapping tepals/sepals. Our largest bulb has been 4 1/2 in diameter which is above average for a digweedii. The leaves can grow as long as 6'. We have not found it to be fertile, so it won't form seeds. We have recorded blooms from July through November here in zone 9, northeast Florida. They are VERY fragrant, smelling like lilac or lemon.
