1. The Holy Family double-sided booklet of 20. Forever Christmas stamps 2012

Feature

Holiday, Christmas Forever Stamps
20 forever stamps - perfect for holiday cards
Comes either as double sided booklet or sheet of 20

Description

The Holy Family stamp, first issued in 2012, celebrates Christmas with a scene from the Nativity story that reminds us of the joys of the season: family, togetherness, and the birth of the baby Jesus. It continues the U.S. Postal Service's tradition of issuing beautiful and timeless Christmas stamps and will be a treasured addition to cards and letters sent during this season of goodwill and sharing. Working together, art director William J. Gicker, designer Greg Breeding, and artist Nancy Stahl created an evocative image of the Holy Family. The stamp illustration shows Joseph leading a donkey that carries Mary and Jesus, guided by a star shining in the twilight of a desert sky. The Holy Family stamp is being issued as a Forever stamp. Forever stamps are always equal in value to the current First-Class Mail one-ounce rate.

Description

The U.S. Postal Service celebrates one of the most beloved stories of the Nativity with an evocative and elegant new stamp, Christmas Magi. The stamp art illustrates the traditional tale of the Magi, who came bearing gifts for Jesus. The three regal figures sit atop a trio of bedecked and harnessed camels, the animals almost at the summit of a small hill. Guiding them is a large, dazzling star shining in the sky. The colors in the sky range from a rose near the horizon, darkening to a rich purple at the top, suggesting that the travelers are moving through the desert at dawn. The figures are silhouetted against the background, with the details of their headdresses and the camels' saddles just visible in the brightening light. The star, located in the upper left-hand corner of the picture, is a brilliant white. This listing is for a double-sided booklet of 20 forever stamps.

Description

During the Christmas holidays, the humble birth of the baby Jesus is depicted in Nativity scenes that are often the centerpiece of many church and family devotions.

The stamp art features a peaceful yet powerful image of the Holy Family silhouetted against a dawn sky. The baby Jesus lies in a straw-filled manger in the center of the picture with Mary kneeling to the right and Joseph standing to the left, holding a lantern. A bright star shines over the scene.

The Gospel of Luke relates how Mary and Joseph traveled to Bethlehem to register for the census decreed by the Roman emperor. The Gospel says: "And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn."

That simple description has been an inspiration for artists since at least the fourth century. In 1223, St. Francis of Assisi is believed to have created the first crche. Derived from an Old French word for "manger" or "crib," crche came to signify a representation of the Nativity scene. Since then, crches have ranged in style from simple sets holding only the Holy Family to elaborate, life-size panoramas that might include shepherds, the Three Wise Men, animals, angels, or the Star of Bethlehem. As the tradition spread to other areas of the world, the crches came to reflect local cultures, with figures in native costume surrounded by animals familiar to the crche maker-a Kenyan elephant, a Navajo skunk, or a Peruvian llama, for example.

Art director Greg Breeding designed the stamp with original art by Nancy Stahl.

Nativity is being issued in booklets of 20 Forever stamps. This Forever stamp will always be equal in value to the current First-Class Mail one-ounce price.

Description

The U.S. Postal Service announced today that this year's contemporary holiday stamps will highlight the role windows play during the holidays. Portraying winter nights, these elegant stamps showcase ways we observe traditions and spread cheer, letting us delight in the snow when we're inside while also sharing our warmth and merriment with the outside world. Available in booklets of 20 with each design repeated five times, the stamps feature a candle, a wreath, a star and a lighted tree. The stamps are sure to add a dash of winter bliss to letters and cards during the year's coldest months. Two of the designs show views from the inside looking out: a single burning candle sits on a sill and a simple star ornament hangs from a hook attached to the window sash, out of sight. Two other designs show views from the outside looking in: a brightly lit Christmas tree contrasts with the snowy shrubs on the other side of the glass and a snow-covered wreath hangs in front of frosted windowpanes. Art director Ethel Kessler of Bethesda, MD, designed the stamps with original artwork by William Low of Huntington, NY. The Holiday Windows stamps are being issued as Forever stamps. These Forever stamps will always be equal in value to the current First-Class Mail 1-ounce price. This listing is for 20 stamps.
