How does a leather slipmat do this? The interaction between the record and the surface can be tracked very easily by the super sensitivity of a good pick up cartridge. Common felt mats provide smooth contact between record and platter but have a disadvantage with static. Felt mats collect of dust which can transfer to the record. Felt mats dampening ability is limited, often problematic with metal platters. Thick rubbermats over-damp the record causing an isolation effect which leaves the static on the record and hearable noise clicks are the result. Leather is an excellent option to upgrade sound quality. Resonances are dampened more effectively than felt, and they keep dust away while avoiding static. Are you tired of your felt mat serving as a dust trap? Is the static electric buildup on your cork mat causing unwanted pops during playback? Static electric charge is generated during the handling and playing of your vinyl records, and felt and cork mats accumulate that static charge, which attracts dust and transfers it to your vinyl records. Static charge can also cause the annoying issue of the mat sticking to your LPs when you lift an LP off of your turntable.
If you've paid good money for a nice turntable with a solid aluminum or acrylic platter, why has the manufacturer decided to provide you with a felt platter mat? Or if you've upgraded your turntable with a glass or acrylic platter, why use the old rubber mat, which is known to be poor at dampening bearing vibrations of some tables?
By experimenting with genuine leather in various thicknesses as a platter mat material, I discovered that leather mats do not collect static charge, and therefore do not collect dust. I also noticed that the leather dampens turntable vibrations without smearing the frequency response that my cartridge/tone arm/platter unit has been designed to capture and transmit.
Each LP leather platter mat has a thickness of approximately 1.2-1.5 mm (~1/16") and a diameter of 292 mm (11.5"), which ensures full support of the LP's playing surface, while still allowing a small margin of space around the edge of the LP (i.e., the groove guard) so the LP can easily be lifted from the platter without disturbing the platter mat. This mat has two, identical suede sides. Either side can be placed down, in contact with your platter, and will provides a flat, non-scratch, non-slip, non-static surface for your vinyl.
