This silk scarfs drawing is based on the ceiling of the Cave 407 in Mogao Caves. Mogao Caves is also known as the Thousand Buddha Grottoes, form a system of 492 temples 25 km southeast of the center of Dunhuang, an oasis strategically located at a religious and cultural crossroads on the Silk Road, in Gansu province, China.
The design of the ceiling includes three rabbits, apsara, flying boys, flying monk, large eight-petalled multi-layered lotus flower, petal motif, honeysuckle and lozenge motif, and triangular valance motif.
This caisson pattern is painted onto the centre of the truncated pyramid ceiling of the cave. The centre of the caisson is painted with a large eight-petalled multi-layered lotus flower. Three rabbits are chasing each other in anticlockwise direction in the core of the flower. Painted around the lotus are figures of apsaras, monks and boys flying in anticlockwise direction encircling the central motif. The direction of their movement echoes with that of the three rabbits.
