Description

Celebrate the season with four new stamps inspired by some of America's favorite holiday songs: "Jingle Bells," "Deck the Halls," "Silent Night," and "Jolly Old Saint Nicholas."

The artist chose images that illustrated a major theme of each of the four carols. A lamb reflects the gentle mood of "Silent Night." Dressed in its finery, a sleigh horse represents the carol "Jingle Bells." Inspired by the lyrics of "Jolly Old Saint Nicholas," the stamp art imagines a child's hopeful monologue with Santa. For "Deck the Halls," Christmas lights and holiday cookies set the mood. The stamp art is designed so the stamps are as graphically pleasing in a group as they are individually. Familiar lyrics from each song highlight the individual stamps. The artist first sketched the artwork in pencil and then rendered it as a digital illustration.

Many carols have roots in the music of the 15th and 16th centuries. In the 19th century-sometimes referred to as the Second Golden Age of Christmas Carols-many cherished carols were collected, arranged, or published, while many new songs that are today's classics were first written.

The late Howard E. Paine was the art director. Artist Steve McCracken created original art for the project.

The Christmas Carols stamp are being issued as Forever stamps. This Forever stamp will always be equal in value to the current First-Class Mail one-ounce price.

Description

During the Christmas holidays, the humble birth of the baby Jesus is depicted in Nativity scenes that are often the centerpiece of many church and family devotions.

The stamp art features a peaceful yet powerful image of the Holy Family silhouetted against a dawn sky. The baby Jesus lies in a straw-filled manger in the center of the picture with Mary kneeling to the right and Joseph standing to the left, holding a lantern. A bright star shines over the scene.

The Gospel of Luke relates how Mary and Joseph traveled to Bethlehem to register for the census decreed by the Roman emperor. The Gospel says: "And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn."

That simple description has been an inspiration for artists since at least the fourth century. In 1223, St. Francis of Assisi is believed to have created the first crche. Derived from an Old French word for "manger" or "crib," crche came to signify a representation of the Nativity scene. Since then, crches have ranged in style from simple sets holding only the Holy Family to elaborate, life-size panoramas that might include shepherds, the Three Wise Men, animals, angels, or the Star of Bethlehem. As the tradition spread to other areas of the world, the crches came to reflect local cultures, with figures in native costume surrounded by animals familiar to the crche maker-a Kenyan elephant, a Navajo skunk, or a Peruvian llama, for example.

Art director Greg Breeding designed the stamp with original art by Nancy Stahl.

Description

The Songbirds in Snow stamps each features one of four birds:
Golden-Crowned Kinglet,
Cedar Waxwing,
Northern Cardinal,
and the Red-Breasted Nuthatch.

Illustrator Robert Giusti painted the original designs in acrylic on canvas board, depicting each bird perched on a snow-covered branch. He and the art director chose these four birds for their color, attractiveness, and adaptability to the small format of a postage stamp.

Golden-Crowned Kinglet The golden-crowned kinglet is only a little larger than a hummingbird. It can survive nighttime temperatures of 40 degrees below zero. The tiny birds roost in evergreen forests and huddle together in small flocks high up in the branches to help them stay warm.

The cedar waxwing (Bombycilla cedrorum) gets its name from its favorite winter food, cedar berries, and the red, waxy tips of some of its wing feathers. One of the few North American birds that thrives on a diet of mostly fruits, the cedar waxwing also consumes the winter fruits of juniper, mistletoe, and crabapple.

A spot of bright red against the white of a snowy tree branch signals the presence of a northern cardinal (Cardinalis cardinalis), one of winter's most colorful and beautiful birds. Cardinals usually appear in pairs but can gather in small flocks during the winter to forage for food.

The red-breasted nuthatch (Sitta canadensis), with its distinctive call like a tiny toy horn, prepares well for the season by caching conifer seeds, its preferred winter food. Stashed in cracks and openings in tree bark, the seeds are collected by the bird as it walks headfirst down the trunk.

Art director Derry Noyes designed the stamps using original illustrations by Robert Giusti.

Two other designs show views from the outside looking in: a brightly lit Christmas tree contrasts with the snowy shrubs on the other side of the glass and a snow-covered wreath hangs in front of frosted windowpanes. Applying light and dark shades of color enhanced the intricate geometry of each flake and added a feeling of playfulness to the stamp art. These bright, cheerful stamps are sure to add a whimsical splash to holiday cards, thank-you notes, invitations, greeting cards, and any mailing that calls for a touch of warmth during the coldest months of the year.
