Die habsburgische Medaille im Munzkabinett des Kunsthistorischen Museums" widmet sich die vorliegende Studie der Fruhzeit dieses Mediums, und damit der Periode der Kaiser Friedrich III. (1452-1493) und Maximilian I. (1508-1519). Ausgangspunkt ist die reiche Sammlung des Munzkabinetts des Kunsthistorischen Museums Wien. Ziel ist es, die Schaustucke der als Kaiser und Konige regierenden Habsburger vorzulegen und zu kommentieren. Dies ist durch die Entstehungsgeschichte des Kabinetts gerechtfertigt, die Garant dafur ist, dass alle relevanten Typen in einer technischen und kunstlerischen Vollkommenheit versammelt wurden, wie sie von anderen Hausern nicht erreicht werden konnte. Die Stucke stammen vor allem aus dem Besitz von Kaiser Karl VI. (1711-1740), vieles geht auch auf Franz I. Stephan von Lothringen (1745-1765) zuruck. Im Zentrum steht die Frage nach der zeitgenossischen Entstehung der Mehrzahl der Typen. Die bisherige Forschungsmeinung ging davon aus, dass Maximilian nicht nur die Pragemedaille, sondern in den 1510er Jahren entscheidend auch die gegossene Schaumunze gefordert habe.
