Description
Our whimsical glass ornament celebrates a small hippopotamus statuette (ca. 1961-1878 B.C.) in The Met collection. This original figure, well-formed in a ceramic material made of ground quartz, demonstrates the Egyptian artist's appreciation for the natural world. Beneath the blue-green glaze, the body was painted with the outlines of river plants, symbolizing the marshes in which the animal lived. Since its arrival at The Met in 1917, "William" has been a Museum visitor favorite.
