Description

Wood betony is an herb native to Europe bearing a spike of purple flowers on a long, central stem reaching 1-2 feet (60 to 90 cm) high. All the leaves are rough to the touch and are also fringed with short, fine hairs; their whole surface is dotted with glands containing a bitter, aromatic oil. In Magick, Wood Betony is used in protection and purification rituals. It is ruled by Jupiter and Fire, and has also been used in dream magick, mainly to protect the sleeper from bad dreams. It is the traditional herb of Midsummer, but can be added to any incense or blend to enhance the powers of purification and protection. In ancient times, it was believed that no evil could cross a protective line drawn by Wood Betony and many people would either plant it or spread it around the home for protection.
