If anyone else had written a song like Promised Land they could retire happy knowing they had hit a peak, but not Bruce. Whereas Born To Run was about a teenager running away, Darkness On The Edge of Town is a man stopping to look at what he is running to, making the whole of the album say more about the truth behind the American Dream than any road movie or Beatnik novel ever could.
