Erst 29 Jahre spter wurde der Stoff fr das Theater adaptiert - mit Erfolg. Hollywood beschloss daran anzuknpfen und einen mit Tyrone Power, Charles Laughton und Elsa Lanchester prominent besetzten Film zu drehen, der nicht nur durch deren schauspielerische Leistung, sondern besonders durch den legendren Auftritt Marlene Dietrichs zu einem zeitlosen Klassiker erhoben wurde. Als Vergleichsgegenstand dieser Arbeit werden Film und Buch herangezogen. Ausschlaggebend fr eine Auseinandersetzung damit war ein subjektives Gefhl, das bei der Rezeption beider Medien entstand: Der Film ist besser als die Kurzgeschichte. Diese bisher noch unbegrndete Empfindung soll, da Handlung sowie Figurenkonzeption und -konstellation weitgehend gleich bleiben, durch die Charakterisierung der Figur Sir Wilfried Robarts zu einer wissenschaftlich belegten These werden. Da dieses Gefhl bei der deutschsprachigen Fassung entstand werden Film und Kurzgeschichte auch nur in dieser Sprachfassung untersucht. Die Entscheidung, sich auf nur eine Figur zu konzentrieren, musste aufgrund der knapp bemessenen Zeichenanzahl fr diese Arbeit gefllt werden. Da Sir Wilfried eine der drei Hauptfiguren ist und er bei der Umwandlung vom Buch zum Film am offensichtlichsten eine charakterliche Erweiterung erfhrt, wurde er als Beispiel fr die Thesenbelegung gewhlt.
